I've been gone a while. I started reading fanfiction to escape and I got sucked in an abyss.

I have no idea if someone else is hosting similar challenges. I just grabbed some of what I have hosted before.

Here's to a happy year of great reading
Jan2023: Not much has changed. Writing a fanfiction now O_o as well as reading but I bought 7 new books in December and hope to get those read soon. Crossing fingers about adding challenges (late!)

Happy Monday (I got a LOT of new books this week)

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week.

Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.  ;-)

Don't forget to link up your list

Next week I'll be posting this on Sundays as I'm trying to blog the alphabet in April.

~ here are the newest review books in my house ~

Too Smart for Bullies by Deputy Sheriff Robert Kahn & Sharon Chandler
Bobby and Mandee's Safety series, 2001, paperback . . . Bobby and Mandee's website

Bullies, Beware! This is a little book is going to have a big impact! In this moral-driven story, Mandee tells big brother Bobby how a bully took all her money. Bobby stresses that she needs adult help, and explains what to do if it happens again. Don't argue; just walk or run away; tell a trusted adult, or call 911. If the adult doesn't believe you, tell another adult until you find someone who understands. A quiz at the back of the book helps the reader remember what to do, and there's a place to write the phone numbers of ""safe grown-ups"" to call.

Too Safe for Strangers by Deputy Sheriff Robert Kahn
Bobby and Mandee's Safety series, 2001, paperback . . . Bobby and Mandee's website

Most children, especially children on the autism spectrum, accept adults' friendliness at face value. Sometimes it can have tragic consequences. Written by a Deputy Sheriff, this book is credited with foiling at least 22 stranger abductions. Characters Bobby and Mandee explain stranger danger in a way that is accessible, but not frightening, for children. Read it to your child and role-play different scenarios. Create a password only you and your child know, label backpacks on the inside (so strangers won't know your name). Strangers can be men or women, old or young. Adults should not touch, give gifts to, or ask for help from children. If they do, don't keep it a secret! Tell an adult! Arm your child with the knowledge that may save his or her life.

There's a whole bunch of them, I just got lucky and received two.

Sinner awakens in a cabin to the sight of a woman with the face of a Madonna and the body of a stripper tending to him.

Destiny is in Alaska, armed with whips, cuffs, and copies of “classic”—who knew?—porn movies, to “sex up” former bestselling author Nadine Roland’s latest manuscript. It’s make or break it time for Destiny, career wise. The last thing she needs is a car that won’t start, a fricking blizzard, and a SEAL named Sinner who thinks she’s into BDSM because of her “toys.”

Note: This book is a re-release “A Paratrooper in a Pear Tree” and has been edited and expanded from the original version.

Alex by Sawyer Bennett
A Cold Fury Hockey Novel, 2014, ebook

Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn’t afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn’t so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.

As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people—like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries—and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy façade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.

But after her marriage in San Francisco falls apart, leaving her penniless and heartsick, she returns to her old family home to find a new direction for her life. On her first night back, though, a steamy encounter with handsome rancher Nate Thalberg is not the fresh start she had in mind . . .

Nate has good reason not to trust the determined beauty who just waltzed into town—he’s no stranger to betrayal. Besides, she’s only there to sell her family’s old property and move back out. But as Nate and Emily begin working side-by-side to restore her time-worn building and old family secrets change Emily’s perception of herself, both are about to learn how difficult it is to hide from love in a place known far and wide for romance, family ties, and happily-ever-afters: a town called Valentine.

Breaking it Down - and Reporting In

Reporting in on last week . . . .
Sleep - horrible, just horrible

DeClutter - I did one cabinet in the kitchen. Doesn't sound like a lot but I bought 4 bowls with lids and gave up 5 bowls with no lids. Plus I recycled a glass bowl/lid that was broken. Found my nut chopper and put a round casserole dish where we could find it to use.

Weight - Not feeling well, no real appetite. I've gone down 2.5 since I started the last time but I haven't weighed since and that may be because I wasn't eating well.

ARCs - nothing

Reading Challenges -not sure where I stand on these. I'll need to sort things out in May, April is booked.

Blogging Challenges - Still doing good with my three posts a week, even if they are late some days. April will be a huge challenge. Wish me luck.

Exercise - :p

Sleep - staying up all night and into the afternoon today. Crossing fingers that it will switch me around

DeClutter -No plans to do anything until May.

Weight - Still need to pick a day as an official weigh day.

ARCs - I have BIG plans to review in April. Echo Lake will have a post up on the 6th

Reading Challenges - Just keep track of what you're reading until May then update all the challenges.

Blogging Challenges - April is coming and I've got plans! My Day of Silence post for Thursday needs to be adjusted. Doing good with my three a week. April will have me posting Monday's on Sunday.
  • Sunday - Goals wrap up and plans for the week
  • Monday - Where are your reading? and Reading Monday
  • Thursday - Cat Thursday and Purrsday

Exercise - This plan hasn't changed. One day with the trainer and four days on my own. If I'm going to meet my weight deadline without moving it back (again!), I need to follow her plans for me. This week it is 40 minutes of cardio on my own, 4 days a week. If I'm short total minutes for the week, I can make them up on a rest day or have an extra long day.

Mon/Tue - 40 min with a target heart range (104-120)
Wed - meet with Bethany, she'll put me through the ringer
Thu/Fri - 40 min with a target heart range (104-120)
I'd like to keep the streak going by getting 10 minutes on Saturday and start the week with yoga on Sunday

Thoughts on . . . Captured Innocence by Kennedy Layne

Hey family? This book is sexier than I usually tell you about so could you please skip this post? ;-)

Captured Innocence
by Kennedy Layne

series: CSA Case Files
publisher: Kennedy Layne Publishing
release date: Sep 2013
ISBN: 978-0989973908

formats available: print, ebook

author's website

from the author:
When former Marine, Connor Ortega, was ordered into the offices of Crest Security Agency on a Saturday morning, he didn't expect the latest case to hit so close to home. A submissive has been murdered in a particularly vicious manner and to bring her killer to justice, he must go undercover. Not hard to do considering he's already part of the BDSM lifestyle.

Lauren Bailey, a local vendor of bejeweled erotic implements, lives vicariously through her clients due to her fear of bondage. When Connor's dominant side can't resist trying to ease her anxieties, she accepts his proposal and agrees to his one stipulation...keep things casual.

When the killer sets his sights on Lauren, Connor is forced to rethink their relationship. He has the training it takes to catch a murderer, but does he have the courage to escape his inner demons and capture Lauren's heart?

my thoughts:
I've been avoiding a favorite genre ever since 50 Shades came out. I read too many reviews to be happy buying it then someone asked, "Don't you think you should read it before you explain why it's a bad book?" Fine. Wow, couldn't finish it. Not like the usual BDSM books I buy at all. I thought he was a stalker and never even got to the sex.

So this book comes up and I'm wondering if it will follow the same way.

Nope. First, the review I read was from Anna (here) and I trust her. Started the book early Friday morning and read until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Friday night I'm reading through dinner.

Now that you know where I'm coming from . . .

Lauren is no shrinking violet, or a virgin, and has some knowledge of the lifestyle. Conner surprises us both with his willingness to "go vanilla" for the most part. It eases Lauren's mind but I'm sure Conner is also thinking "hey, sex".

The nice thing about the story is that it isn't a sex story with a plot. It is true that a submissive is killed while in what looks to be a scene. Also true, the main male lead is a Dom and the lead female works with sex toys but I feel the who-done-it part would be just as strong with sexual tension instead of sex. That being said . . . I liked the sex. A lot.  ;-)  At one point they're snowed in and they're playful in their interactions. I didn't say the sex wasn't hot, just that they felt real to me.
She stared at his lips a little too long, but found that her body was ready for another tumble in the sheets… even though she couldn’t remember what round of sex they were on. She was coming to really appreciate this snowstorm.

back to reading . . .

Things weren’t going as planned. . . . It was time to clean up his mess. Loose ends had to be clipped and he knew just who to start with.
See? Not only great sex but a great story. Can't wait to find out how this ends!

back to reading . . .

Wow. I did not see that coming! My copy has a sneak peek of book 2 which I'll read later. Time for dinner, finally.

Don't be scared of the BDSM aspect, it isn't that heavy, and while the sex is there and you shouldn't skip it, it really isn't a sex book. Think jalapeno when mainstream books are chili pepper.

DeClutter Challenge Week 3

The 3rd Annual
91 Day DeClutter Challenge

Hosted at Mary Organizes
details here

Third Week: Bathrooms

We have two and a half bathrooms, one of which is the master. The half bath has recently been remodeled as much as we had money for. The last bath is the hall bath upstairs. It is used by the other three bedrooms upstairs. There was a plumbing leak and the pressure to this shower is horrible so the shower/tub is mostly unused. We'll be remodeling it soon ~throws confetti~.

dang it, now I have to sweep/vacuum again!

Before Pictures
I'm standing just outside the door, looking at the cabinet and flooring
Counter top. Why yes, that is a tree behind the toilet

Yes, that's supposed to be a rainbow. The paint colors I wanted were TOO expensive

There has been carpet in this bath for as long as we've owned the house (our bath too) so the flooring is extra yucky/dirty. We'll be talking to a designer about what we can do with the money we have. So far, I know two things. We'll be getting a white tub, not a beige one, and the toilet stays (for now).

Breaking it Down - and Reporting In

Reporting in on last week . . . .
Sleep -1:30 still isn't working, I think I need to do an up ALL night again to get back on track.

DeClutter - The hall bath needs to be remodeled. We did go look at Lowe's and made the decision that we need help and will talk to a designer. I worked in my closet some. Ten more shirts gone.

Weight - I've got to pick a new "official" day to weight in. Husband went out of town on business and while I didn't get cookies like I normally would, I could have made better choices. Down .8

ARCs - Not only did I not review a book this week, I've received one and two more are on their way.

Reading Challenges - I returned a (late!) library book. Does that count? I started a non-fiction.

Blogging Challenges - My three a week is going but that's all I can say about my blogging.

Exercise - March's 5k was actually 3.1415 on the 14th. I did 3.15 on the treadmill. By Friday? Everything about going to the gym was irritating so Bethany told me to take Thursday off this week. I'm assuming I need to workout Saturday instead. I'm exercising too far above my "fat burning" zone and she doesn't want me to over train. It was way too weird taking Thursday off.

Sleep - goal for this week is 1:30 p.m., again.

DeClutter - Let us not discuss the kitchen. The dining room and pantry are worse.

Weight - Need to pick a new weigh in day, I don't know how much it has changed since I started. Still working on fewer "cheat" food choices, and more water.

ARCs - Dang it! Read one of these and get a review up! . . . (yes, this is the same list)

Reading Challenges - let's narrow this down also, pick one . . .
  1. one non-fiction (started one, finish it)
  2. one library book
  3. finish one book this week

Blogging Challenges - April is coming and there is an A-Z blogging challenge coming up that I'd like to do again this year. April also has Day of Silence to plan around. For March, I'd like to post Purrsday every week (doing good!) and add Sunday
  • Sunday - Goals wrap up and plans for the week
  • Monday - Where are your reading? and Reading Monday
  • Thursday - Cat Thursday and Purrsday

Exercise - One day with the trainer and four days on my own.

We Are the Destroyers by D. K. Lindler
We Are ** Are We, 2014, trade paperback

Many thousands of years ago on a planet in the Belt of Orion, Captain Bel'lar accepts a monumental task. Over consumption is destroying his home planet, and synthetic foods are turning his people into degenerated mutants. As one of the few remaining but persecuted Organs, Bel'lar and his small crew are sent to find the semi-mythical blue-white planet and discover if it is really a place for humanity to begin again.

But the visions of his beautiful companion Ry Sing, a mystic and seer shake Bel'lar. She tells him that eons ago, Bel'lar was faced with the burden of saving his people from their own greed. Only then he was the Great One, the sacred head of their religion. He had seen no other way to liberate them than to destroy the planet in a great cataclysm. . . But could this vision be true?

Bel'lar and his crew find the blue-white planet, a wonderful, habitable place. They return home but 350 years have passed. The Synthetics have taken over the planet and Organs don¹t exist anymore. Searching for anyone to take back to the blue-white planet, Bel'lar is captured and taken to the Compound of the Congress where he learns he will be sacrificed at the Last Rites of Ester. When Bel'lar is brought out to be sacrificed, the truth of Ry Sing¹s vision begins to reveal itself. Will he be able to avoid his destiny this time? Or is he fated to live the vision once again?

Poisoned by Jeff Benedict
non-fiction, 2-13, trade paperback

The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat

In this riveting work of narrative nonfiction, award-winning journalist and best-selling author Jeff Benedict chronicles the events surrounding the biggest food-poisoning epidemic in US history and how this unprecedented crisis sparked public awareness about unsanitary practices in the fast food industry. Poisoned draws on access to confidential documents and exclusive interviews with the real-life characters at the center of the drama.

Deviations: Submission by Jodi Payne and Chris Owen
m/m romance, 2008, trade paperback

Tobias is a skilled Dom, able to bring even the most hesitant submissive around. Noah is a man in need of just that. He wants to sub badly, but has yet to find someone he believes can take him where he needs to go. Through a series of encounters in the world of bondage and discipline, Noah reveals why he has trouble trusting, why he needs such a firm, steady hand.

Tobias may allow himself to dominate, but he has trouble letting himself love. Still, Tobias can't resist Noah's charms, and the two of them set about making a scene for themselves, one that works for them and their unique set of problems. They learn to love, but can they stay together while they explore each others' secrets, in a world where all is laid bare and emotions run high?

(well thought out, well researched, this is the book to read when you want a BDSM book. The scenes are intense, the sex is hot, and both meet in a club, understand the lingo and know what they want)

All for You by Jessica Scott
Coming Home, 2014, ebook

Can a battle-scarred warrior . . .

Stay sober. Get deployed. Lead his platoon. Those are the only things that matter to Sergeant First Class Reza Iaconelli. What he wants is for everyone to stay out of his way; what he gets is Captain Emily Lindberg telling him how to deal with his men. Fort Hood's newest shrink is smart as a whip and sexy as hell. She's also full of questions-about the army, its soldiers, and the agony etched on Reza's body and soul.

. . . open his heart to love?

Emily has devoted her life to giving soldiers the care they need-and deserve. Little does she know that means facing down the fierce wall of muscle that is Sergeant Iaconelli like it's just another day at the office. When Reza agrees to help her understand what makes a soldier tick, she's thrilled. Too bad it doesn't help her unravel the sexy warrior in front of her who stokes her desire and touches a part of her she thought long dead. He's the man who thinks combat is the only escape from the demons that haunt him. The man who needs her most of all . . .

The memory Box by Eva Lesko Natiello
suspense, 2014, ebook

What if you googled yourself and discover a past you don't remember?

A group of privileged suburban moms amuse themselves by Googling everyone in town, digging up dirt to fuel thorny gossip. Caroline Thompson, devoted mother of two, sticks to the moral high ground and attempts to avoid these women. She’s relieved to hear her name appears only three times, citing her philanthropy. Despite being grateful that she has nothing to hide, a delayed pang of insecurity prods Caroline to Google her maiden name—which none of the others know. The hits cascade like a tsunami. Caroline’s terrified by what she reads. An obituary for her sister, JD? That’s absurd. With every click, the revelations grow more alarming. They can’t be right. She’d know. Caroline is hurled into a state of paranoia—upending her blissful family life—desperate to prove these allegations false before someone discovers they’re true. The disturbing underpinnings of The Memory Box expose a story of deceit, misconceptions, and an obsession for control. With its twists, taut pacing, and psychological tenor, Natiello's page turning suspense cautions: Be careful what you search for.
